Manny Ortiz was a three sport participant at New Bedford High School and a bona-fide all star As a football player, Manny was a member of the 1994 state championship team in his sophomore year. He became a two-way player as a junior and senior, playing both offensive and defensive tackle. As a senior, he was elected captain of the team and after a superb season, was selected to the Big 3 all-star team.
After graduating from NBHS, Manny attended Boston University on a football scholarship and after one year at BU, transferred to the University of New Hampshire where he continued to play football and graduated from UNH with a B.S. degree in Computer Science.
Manny participated on the swim team at NBHS for four years. He blossomed in his senior year to become one of the best swimmers in the state. In the south sectional championship meet of 1997. Manny finished first in the 60-yard freestyle with a time of 22.39 seconds. He also captured first place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.82 seconds (a NBHS record which still stands today).
Going on to the state championship meet in 1997, NBHS placed third as a team in Division I, largely on the efforts of Manny. He had a third place finish in the 50 yard freestyle and second place in the 100 yard butterfly. He was selected by the Boston Globe as an All-Star swimmer for 1997.
As a volleyball player, Manny was a three year starter from 1995 to 1997. He was a middle hitter and because of his skill and leadership, was chosen as captain in 1997. The team won state championships in 1995 and 1997 and was in the finals in 1996. A significant reason for the loss in 1996 was that Manny was injured and did not play in that game.
Manny still holds the record for career blocks at NBHS with 191 (the second best is more than 50 less) and was so dominant that he was selected as a Boston Globe All-Star in 1996 and 1997 as well as an All-Big 3 pick for three years. He ultimately was selected as the 1997 NBHS
Athlete of the Year.

Although Mark DeBrito played basketball, baseball, and football throughout his high school career, it was in his senior year that his star brightly shined for New Bedford High School in three varsity sports.
On the basketball team, he went from a 6-foot reserve center as a junior in 1994 to a 6'1" starting center as a senior who led the Whalers in scoring, averaging 17.7 points per game, and in rebounding, averaging 9.6 rebounds per contest.
His senior year as a baseball player added proof that Mark was one of the most talented athletes in the annals of NBHS sports. Mark pitched and played outfield, and as a pitcher, he worked 53 2/3 innings and compiled a 5-1 win-loss record. His ERA was a scant 2.89 and he struck out 72 opponents.
Mark's greatest heroics may have come on the gridiron. As a wide receiver on the football team, he led the Whalers by catching six touchdown passes and added two 2-point conversion catches. If that weren't enough, even though he had never played defense prior to his senior year, he led the team in combined interceptions and deflected passes from his safety position.
For his magnificent contributions to NBHS's basketball, baseball, and football teams of 1995, Mark was chosen as the Standard-Times All-Around Male Athlete of the Year.
Mark went on to play football at Bentley College where, as a sophomore, he set that school's record for most catches in a season (60), most yards receiving (1,013) and most touchdowns (13). He was named to the Street and Smith's Division II All-America Preseason Team in 1998.
Cheryl Prevost participated in the sport of gymnastics for four years as she attended New Bedford High School. It was the only sport she participated in at NBHS and it is not often that a single sport student-athlete is selected to the New Bedford High School All-Sports Hall of Fame. But, Cheryl's accomplishments in her chosen sport were so outstanding that one sport was enough to get her elected to the Hall of Fame.
Beginning in 1993, her freshman year, the honors began to roll in. As a freshman she was chosen the Rookie of the Year in the Big 3 Conference. She then proceeded to be chosen the League Most Valuable Player in her sophomore, junior and senior years, setting a standard that may never be equaled.
Cheryl scored the first 9.0 ever for an NBHS gymnast in 1993 on the balance beam, and also set records in the yault (9.0), the all-around (33.6) and the floor exercise (8.8).
Three times she was selected as an All Eastern Mass All-Star and four times she was chosen to the Standard-Times Gymnastic All-Star Team.

She was also a member of the Massachusetts National Team her senior year, a team that won the bronze medal for its third place finish nationally. She was a High School All-American for 1996.
